Their work helps explain why sildenafil, more widely known as Viagra, has already been shown to improve heart function and may one day have value in either treating or preventing heart damage due to chronic high blood pressure.

The key, investigators say, is sildenafil's effects on a single protein, RGS2, newly identified in the latest study as an essential link in the chain reactions that initially protect the body's main blood-pumping organ from spiraling into heart failure.

Experimenting in mice, the team of heart experts first established that after a week of induced high blood pressure, the hearts of animals engineered to lack RGS2, or regulator of G-protein signaling 2, quickly expanded in weight by 90 percent. Almost half the mice died of heart failure. In mice with RGS2, by contrast, the dangerous muscle expansion, known as hypertrophy, was delayed, growing only 30 percent, and no mice died.

Subsequent tests treating hypertensive mice that had RGS2 with sildenafil showed enhanced buffering, with less hypertrophy, stronger heart muscle contraction and relaxation, and as much as 10 times lower stress-related enzyme activity compared to their untreated counterparts. In mice lacking RGS2, sildenafil had no effect.

"Sildenafil (Viagra) clearly prolongs the protective effects of RGS2 in mouse hearts," says study senior investigator and cardiologist David Kass, M.D.

FDA objects to online ad for Pfizer's Viagra

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -
An online advertisement with men
praising online pharmacy to the tune of an Elvis Presley song has drawn
objections from U.S. regulators, who said drugmaker Pfizer Inc
failed to list the impotence drug's risks.

Pfizer said the omission of side effects warnings was due
to a technical error on CNN's Web site, http://www.cnn.com,
which ran the advertisement.


The Food and Drug Administration sent a written warning to
Pfizer that was made public on Monday.


"The video raises public health and safety concerns through
its complete omission of risk information for Viagra by
suggesting that Viagra is safer than has been demonstrated,"
the FDA said in its letter, dated April 16.


Viagra's prescribing instructions warn against use by men
taking heart drugs known as nitrates and caution about sudden
vision and hearing loss and other problems.


Pfizer spokesman Francisco Gebauer said the risk
information should have appeared simultaneously in print on the
computer screen. The information did not run "due to a
technical error" on the Web site of CNN, a unit of Time Warner
Inc
, Gebauer said.


"We regret that the Internet video ran without the
appropriate safety information," he said.


CNN spokesman Sal Petruzzi said the company's Web site had
a "technical mishap" that was corrected.+


To avoid similar errors, Pfizer has pulled all 30-second
Internet video ads that require safety information to appear
separately on the screen rather than within the advertisement,
Gebauer said.


Viagra's worldwide sales were nearly $1.8 billion in 2007.

Meditation or cheap cialis?

Last night this girl I know was talking about what keeps her from going ballistic in this crazy, insane city. Her answer? She said her choices were either meditation or medication. She picked meditation and has reaped all the rewards from it—minus all those pesky side effects.

Now, I understand what she's talking about, since I meditate myself. Sometimes I sit quietly and say mantras to myself ("Help me do the right thing") and sometimes I picture my body filling with light and calm vibes. Most days I write gratitude lists, and that's my meditation, since it's just some quiet time for me to reflect and listen to the universe. I know people who meditate when they work out, others who listen to guided meditations and a few who sit down in the Lotus position and stare at the flame of a candle until their minds go blank. All of these are great ways to meditate and all can impact a person's well-being.

In case you're not familiar with meditation, here's a basic list of the benefits of this practice:

* Improves general health. When your mind focuses on a particular part of the body, the blood flow to that part increases and cells receive more oxygen and other nutrients in abundance.
